High-Powered Class IV – Relieving Pain

In the clinic we treat a wide range of orthopaedic conditions, such as ankle sprains and low-back spasms and aches, with light [1] [2]. These focused, high-powered therapeutic lasers effectively reduce  symptoms and promotes the body’s natural, normal healing processes. It is completely painless, and many of our clients actually find the warmth from the light soothing.

What Is Cold Laser Therapy? Is It The Same Lasers Used In Hair Removal?

The Class IV lasers, even though it is the powerful, it is still considered a cold laser therapy as it applies a relatively low level of heat compared to lasers, for example, used in cosmetics, for hair removal, and in surgical procedures for the removal of tutors.

    What To Expect

At Dublin Physical & Chiropractic our physical therapists use the laser in combination with other therapeutic treatments (such as chiropractic, non-surgical spinal decompression, exercise, or massage) to reduce dysfunction and discomfort and improve function.

During your initial consultation, your physical therapist will gather your history and perform a thorough clinical assessment to objectively measure your degree of limitations and areas to improve during treatments.

Your physical therapist will then decide if this form of therapy would be beneficial for you, for example, if you have signs of inflammation, such as redness or swelling, and add it to your treatments.

If so, they will start a course of, generally, 6-10 sessions. During your treatment each session, your therapist will use the laser on the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes.

You may feel results 12-24 hours after the session. Your physical therapist will also prescribe exercises to perform at home in between sessions to future promote optimal recovery. Many of clients treated at the clinic with light feel the difference after one session.

High-powered light can be used to reduce symptoms associated with many joints and conditions, such as the following [3][4][5].

Is There A Risk To Damaging The Skin?

The Class IV laser (approved by the FDA in 2006) penetrates deeply while remaining non-invasive, and causes no damage to the skin – as long as it is in the competent hands of a trained professional. This kind of high powered laser is used to treat the same conditions as the cold laser, however, the Class IV is capable of reaching depths of 6 to 9 inches, with a treatment beam of up to 3 inches.

    How Does The Laser Work?

How I describe to my clients in practice how it works is that it is a form of energy, much like how photosynthesis works to stimulate the growth of plants, light therapy works in a similar way to stimulate a biological change in the cells of the muscle, tendon, or joint that is exposed to the light. It is simply a form of energy that promotes a change on a cellular level, rebuilding stronger fibres that have been damaged due to injury or degeneration.

The near-infrared light that we use in the clinic increases oxygen-rich blood to the area – nourishing the damaged fibres and flushing them of debris, like damaged cells.

Just like how blue light is utilised in hospitals to reduce bilirubin in the blood of new born babies- near-infrared light, an invisible light that increases mitochondrial activity and ATP (or energy) production in tissues like muscle tissue and tendon tissue to promote the body’s natural healing process [6]. Another example of ‘photobiostimulation’ is how a bright winter morning affects our mood – it wakes us up and makes us feel happy.

    The Health Benefits

Here are the benefits of high-powered light:

    • It is 100% natural – no drugs, no surgery.
    • It works with the body’s natural healing processes.
    • It reduces inflammation.
    • It reduces wear and tear.
    • It reduces swelling.
    • It reduces the bruising.
    • It increases range of motion.
    • It improves function.
    • It promotes stronger, more organised fibres to form.
    • It only takes 15-20 minutes per session to be effective – as opposed to 120 minutes of class II or III powered lasers to have the same effect.
    • It speeds up the recovery process.
