What Causes The Symptoms, Like Stiffness And Swelling?

There are more than 100 different kinds of arthritis, each with its own cause. Osteoarthritis is the most common form and typically affects people over age 50. Other forms of arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis (RA), gout, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It causes pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints, especially in weight-bearing joints like hips or knees. Symptoms vary depending on which joint(s) are affected but include stiffness after rest; popping sounds when moving a joint; pain; decreased range of motion (decreased ability to put weight on an affected joint); muscle weakness.

What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints. It also affects other organs of the body including blood vessels, lymph nodes, the respiratory system, and the eyes. Symptoms include fatigue; morning stiffness (especially in small joints); symmetrical joint inflammation; spontaneous remissions followed by periods of relapse activity with increased pain and stiffness.

What is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that affects the joints, especially in the feet. It’s caused by excess uric acid which can lead to painful inflammation and swelling around joints. Symptoms include pain; redness; warmth over affected joint(s); increased size or mass of affected area compared with other parts of the body; tenderness when pressing on the affected area; joint stiffness in the morning.

What is Psoriatic Arthritis?

Psoriatic arthritis can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness in joints on both sides of the body (bilateral). It’s often associated with psoriasis which causes scaly patches or sores to form on the skin. Symptoms include fatigue; morning stiffness; pain that worsens with the use of affected joint(s) over time or activity level; swelling around joints.

What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?

Ankylosing spondylitis causes inflammation and stiffening in the spine, pelvis, neck, ribs, and other areas near the spinal column. Symptoms include pain and stiffness in the back, neck, or other joints; a loss of spinal flexibility, and can cause general fatigue, vision problems, and breathing difficulties.

What is Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis?

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis causes inflammation and swelling in one or more joints which can lead to irreversible damage if left untreated. This form affects approximately 20% of the population and often begins in childhood or adolescence. Symptoms include pain; swelling that affects one or more joints on both sides of the body (bilateral); difficulty moving affected joint(s).

Physical Therapy

Our physical therapists will see you for an initial consultation to gather your history and perform a clinical assessment. Afterwards, they will formulate a specialized treatment program with you. Each treatment program is individually tailored and goal-orientated. The treatment goals may include – a reduction in pain, swelling, and stiffness, an increase in the range of motion and freedom of movement, and a strengthening of the muscles around the affected joint or joints.

Physiotherapy for arthritis

Your physical therapist will use a combination of hands-on therapies such as massage therapy and joint mobilizations to reduce pain and stiffness, and graded exercise therapy to improve muscle strength.

Our physical therapists’ goal is to help become pain-free and strong, to allow you to get back to the activities, hobbies, or sports you love to do.

Laser Therapy – Natural, Powerful Pain Relief

At Dublin Chiropractic & Physical Therapy, you can also reduce your arthritis pain and stiffness with our laser therapy. Our physical therapist will use a high-tech, state-of-the-art cold laser to help stimulate healing in joints that have been affected by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis so they can move more freely again.

Spinal Decompression & Joint Traction

Spinal decompression and joint traction are great therapy options that we offer at Dublin Chiropractic & Physical Therapy for relieving painful joints associated with arthritis. And the professional team has been using spinal decompression and joint traction with clients with arthritis for many years and has seen great results and received positive feedback from clients.

Spinal decompression and joint traction work by relieving pressure on the joints of the spine or extremities to reduce inflammation and stiffness, nourish the joint, and promote joint health. The gentle stretch on the joint increases oxygen-rich blood flow to the joint surfaces speeding up the healing process of any tissue damage.

Spinal decompression is also very safe, pain-free, and works with the body’s natural healing processes and mechanics.

Exercise Therapy

Exercise therapy is another great treatment option that we offer here at Dublin Chiropractic & Physical Therapy. Our physical therapists use exercise therapy to help you get stronger and increase your range of motion so you can live a pain-free life without limits.

Upper Body Strengthening Dublin Physio

We believe everyone should be able to enjoy the things they love, which is why we offer a variety of exercise therapy options for our clients with arthritis. We can help you get back to doing what makes you happy again!

Core Exercises

Most people do not use their core muscles correctly or at all. Utilising our core correctly has so many long-term health benefits. Our strong core muscles can take a lot of the stress and demands put on our bodies. But for most people, the muscles can surround our joints and the somewhat vulnerable structures of our joints (such as the cartilage, ligaments, or bursas) take all the load.

For prevention of injury and pain, for optimal functioning, and to truly function to bodies true potential, it is important to not only use the muscles that surround our joints but also to use our core muscles!

Intrinsic core strengthening will activate your core muscles and help offload the demands and stress put on your joints that lead to painful conditions like arthritis.
