What Is Degenerative Disc Disease?

Degenerative changes are a natural part of ageing, of our life cycle, things are broken-down and rebuild, and this cycle, as we age, slows down, and rebuilding starts to take longer and longer. Degenerative disc disease is one degenerative condition that we see in our clinic often. It is a gradual process in which the spinal spinal discs, which act as cushions between the vertebrae and limit excessive movement, began is degenerative or change structurally.

Degenerative disc disease is often seen in the lower back or lumbar spine, but can affect any part of the spine including cervical (neck) and thoracic (middle back). It is normal for an ageing person to develop degenerative discs, it is an inevitable part of the ageing process, however it does not always lead to pain.

Only when the degeneration progresses and starts to cause problems will people begin to experience symptoms, however, it is important to be proactive particularly when to comes to spinal health. Just because something is “normal” it does not mean it should be accepted or trivialised or that there is nothing that can be done, there is a lot of good that can do done.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is also an excellent treatment for degenerative disc disease. Our chiropractors will adjust your spine to help improve spinal function and decrease pain.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy reduces pain and inflammation and helps to promote healing. It is a non-invasive treatment that uses light energy to stimulate the body’s natural healing process. It works by using different wavelengths of light to target different cells and tissues. Each session only lasts a maximum of 15 minutes.

Spinal Decompression

Spinal decompression is an effective treatment for degenerative disc disease. This treatment uses gentle force to separate the vertebrae and take the pressure off of the discs. This allows them to heal and helps to reduce pain.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a treatment that uses acoustic waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing process. It works by targeting different cells and tissues with specific wavelengths of energy. This therapy is effective in reducing pain and inflammation, and rebuilding stronger and more organised tissues.
