What Is The Cause Of Peripheral Artery Disease?
Peripheral artery disease is caused by a build-up of plaque in the arteries, also known as arteriosclerosis. This can lead to a narrowing of the arteries, which reduces the blood flow to your limbs. This condition is most commonly seen in people who are over 60 years old, but it can occur at any age. This can occur in the arms or legs but most commonly occurs in the legs.
What Are The Symptoms Of Peripheral Artery Disease?
The main symptom of peripheral artery disease is a muscular pain or cramping in the calf, which is called claudication. Claudication occurs when walking or doing other physical activities.
Where the pain is felt depends on the artery that is affected. The pain intensity can range from mild to very severe and debilitating, effecting ability to walk and carry out daily activities.
Other symptoms include:
- Leg cramping, felt commonly in the calf, but can also be felt in the thigh and around the hips.
- Aching.
- Burning.
- Numbness.
- Leg weakness.
- Alterations in temperature, coldness of the foot.
- Alternations in colour, a bluish, paleness, or redness of the skin.
- Alternations in the health or quality of the skin of the lower legs, soreness can development.
- Shiny skin and hair loss of the legs.
- A weakened pulse in the legs and feet.
How We Help People With Peripheral Arterial Disease
We use a combination of physical therapy and chiropractic treatments to manage peripheral artery disease.
Our physical therapist uses a treatment called functional exercise training, which is an individualised therapy for patients with claudication.
The Purpose Of Our Treatment
The purpose of this treatment is to help you improve your walking capacity and reduce your symptoms, increase the distance over which you can walk before experiencing pain, and improve your overall quality of life.
Our chiropractor uses a treatment called manual therapy. This is a hands-on approach that helps to restore movement and function to the joints and muscles in the body.
This can help to reduce pain, increase mobility, and improve function.
Both our physical therapist and chiropractor use treatments that are tailored specifically to you, and we will work with you to create a treatment plan that helps you manage your peripheral artery disease.

Physical Therapy For Peripheral Artery Disease
Physical therapy can help to improve function, mobility and reduce pain in people with peripheral artery disease.
Our physical therapist uses a treatment called functional exercise training, which is an individualised therapy for patients with claudication.
Chiropractic Care or Peripheral Artery Disease
Chiropractic care includes a combination of spinal adjustments and activator to release stiff joints and allow movement of the joints, which reduces pressure on the nerves, improving their conductive capacity.
Laser Therapy For Peripheral Artery Disease
Laser therapy works on a cellular level to regenerate and rebuild new cells, include blood vessels. Laser therapy uses light to stimulate a positive biological change within the body.
Shockwave Therapy For Peripheral Artery Disease
Using sound waves, shockwave therapy releases tension in the muscles and breaks down scar tissue that has formed around inflamed joints.
This helps to reduce pain, increase mobility and improve function.
Exercise Therapy For Peripheral Artery Disease
Our physical therapists will create an exercise plan for you to help strengthen your muscles and joints, which can improve function, reduce pain, and increase mobility.
Intrinsic Core Strengthening For Peripheral Artery Disease
Strengthening the core is important in peripheral artery disease management.
Our physical therapist will include intrinsic core strengthening exercises in your treatment plan to help improve function and reduce pain.
Non-surgical Spinal Decompression For Peripheral Artery Disease
If you are experiencing back pain as a result of peripheral artery disease, our chiropractor may recommend non-surgical spinal decompression.
This is a treatment that uses a traction table to help decompress the spine and relieve pressure on the nerves.
