What Causes Shin Splints?
The exact cause of shin splints or what is sometimes called medial tibial stress syndrome is incomplete. Generally, there is a mechanism of ‘overload’ or over doing it during exercise, or perhaps how you train or exercise, for example, your form or duration. But these are only hypotheses, the cause is unknown. However, according to an article written by Scientific American there are two main causes, characterised by the areas in which stress is most applied:
- Soft tissue, either the muscles or fascia of the shin is inflamed due to overuse and stress.
- Or the bone is stressed, causing micro, stress fractures.
Why Splints?
We can understand why ‘shin’ is in the name but why ‘splints’ – a splint isn’t the answer to this painful condition, so why? We researched this question…and unfortunately could not find an answer. If you know the reason why ‘splints’ is in the name, reach out to us.
Prevent Shin Splints
Some researchers have looking into ways to prevent shin splints. For example, wearing insoles, but there is little evidence to support the use of insoles. Currently, there is no one way to prevent medial tibial stress syndrome or shin splints. However, we believe advise from physical therapists and chiropractors could help to preventing this conditions.

Chiropractor For Shin Splints
Our chiropractors utilise a wide range of techniques to help relieve shin splints including spinal adjustments, non-surgical spinal decompression, and intrinsic core strengthening. All these therapies are designed to increase freedom of movement by reducing pain and stiffness, and allowing the nervous system to work as it should, free of interruption.
Laser Therapy For Shin Splint Pain
Laser therapy works by increasing blood flow in the shin, which speeds up the healing process. It is a safe, non-invasive treatment that can significantly reduce shin splint pain. It uses light therapy to help shin splint pain, shin splint inflammation, shin splint swelling and shin splint stiffness.
Shockwave Therapy For Shin Splints
Shockwave therapy works by decreasing inflammation and improving circulation in the shin area to help stimulate new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis). Shockwave therapy uses high-powered sound-waves to breakup tension and adhesions .
Exercise Therapy For Shin Splints
Exercise therapy is an important part of any treatment plan for shin splints. Our physical therapists will design a program that is specific to your needs, and will help to improve range of motion, strength, and flexibility.
Spinal Decompression For Shin Splints
Non-surgical spinal decompression is an excellent treatment option for shin splints. It is a non-invasive treatment that works by gently stretching the spine to reduce pressure between the discs and vertebrae.
Non-surgical spinal decompression improves blood flow, reduces compression on nerves, increases range of motion and flexibility in your back, neck or legs (which can help shin splint pain), and helps to promote the healing process.
Spinal Adjustments For Shin Splints
Chiropractic adjustments are an excellent treatment for shin splints. They work by realigning the vertebrae in your spine, which can help relieve pressure on nerves and improve blood flow. This, in turn, can help reduce shin splint pain.
Intrinsic Core Strengthening
Core strengthening is an important part of any treatment plan for shin splints. Our chiropractors will prescribe a program of core exercises that will help to improve stability and strength in your midsection, which can help to reduce the risk of shin splints.
If you are suffering from shin splints, please contact Dublin Physical & Chiropractics to book a consultation with one of our physical therapists or chiropractors.
