What Causes Shoulder Pain?

Many doctors and medical professionals refer to a stiff shoulder as ‘Frozen Shoulder’, therefore this term is now being faded out as new research has revealed that the term ‘Frozen Shoulder’ is inaccurate and can be catastrophizing for clients. We prefer to simply use the terms ‘stiff shoulder’ or ‘painful shoulder’ to keep things simple and accurate. Similarly, the term ‘Impingment’ is also being faded out as it is no longer an accurate way of describing what is happening in the shoulder joint.

Common Causes Of Dysfunction Of The Shoulder

  • Trauma or sports injury.
  • Muscle tear – i.e Rotator Cuff Tear or Deltoid Tear.
  • Shoulder dislocation.
  • Degenerative changes in the joint – i.e OA or osteoarthritis.
  • Overuse or repetitive strain.
  • Referred pain for the neck.
  • Improper posture – i.e if your head is in a forward-head posture and not in alignment with your shoulders and hips as you sit there could be unnecessary pressure on the nerves of the head and neck leading to shoulder pain.
  • Improper posture during shoulder activities – for example during work.

‘Shoulder Instability’ is simply another way of describing weak or fatigued muscles around the shoulder like the muscles of the ‘Rotator Cuff’. Shoulder instability can sometimes be the result of many shoulder dislocations or a period of immobilization (i.e having your arm in a cast).

Rotator Cuff Tear

You may have also heard of the term ‘Rotator Cuff’ from other medical professionals. The Rotator Cuff is simply a group of four muscles that provide stability to the shoulder and help move the shoulder. So if these muscles are weak as a result of nerve damage or compression, a period of immobilization or muscle tear that shoulder can become less supported by these muscles or in other words – unstable. But we don’t like using the term ‘unstable’.

Other common causes of shoulder pain are sports injuries or repetitive strain injuries. For example, a work-related strain injury is common in those who lift heavy objects as part of their workday, for example, construction workers or carpenters. You may have heard of ‘swimmer’s shoulder’ or ‘thrower’s arm’ – these are commonly used terms to describe shoulder pain in athletes who use their shoulders in their chosen sport.

Spinal Decompression For Pain Relief

Spinal Decompression works by taking pressure or stress off the joints of the neck or shoulder that is causing pain, discomfort, inflammation, or degeneration experienced by those with Spinal Stenosis. A gentle and gradual pull is applied to the joints, that not only relieves the pressure on the joint but also nourishes and lubricants the joints – promoting cell renewal, regeneration and relieves pain.

The Benefits of Spinal Decompression

Shoulder Pain can often be caused by a herniated disc or inflammation of the joints of the neck. Not only is spinal decompression been found to effectively reduce herniated discs and inflammation, but it is also pain-free, and many people find the gradual, gentle pull or traction on the neck very relaxing as it slowly relieves pressure on the spine unlike anything else, finally giving much-needed rest-bite from frustrating and sometimes exhausting shoulder pain. If you are curious or interested in simply trying out spinal decompression for shoulder pain feel free to contact us for more information.

Intrinsic Core Strengthening For Shoulder Pain

Most people do not use their core muscles correctly or at all. Utilizing our core correctly has so many long-term health benefits. Our strong core muscles can take a lot of the stress and demands put on our bodies. But for most people, the muscles can surround our joints and the somewhat vulnerable structures of our joints (such as the cartilage, ligaments, or bursas) take all the load.

For prevention of injury and pain, for optimal functioning and to truly function to bodies true potential, it is important to not only use the muscles that surround our joints but also to use our core muscles! Intrinsic core strengthening will activate your core muscles and help offload the demands and stress put on your joints, for example, the shoulder joint.

Chiropractic Spinal Adjustments For Shoulder Pain

Chiropractic spinal adjustments work by relieving stiffness and pressure on the nerves, often the cause of the shoulder pain, allowing you to feel and move much more freely.

Benefits of Chiropractic Spinal Adjustments

  • A reduction in pain and discomfort.
  • A decrease in inflammation.
  • Alleviation from stress and tension.
  • An Improvement in physical function and performance.

Laser Therapy For A Shoulder Injury

Laser Therapy works by promoting the natural healing process of the body. It promotes cell growth and increases mitochondrial cells. Mitochondrial cells or mitochondria are important for all metabolic processes in the body – including healing damaged or inflamed joints or muscles. Laser therapy has been shown to effectively relieve pain and swelling in those suffering from pain caused by spinal stenosis by reducing inflammation and promoting healthy cell regeneration.

How Chiropractic Treatments Help Those with Shoulder Pain

Chiropractic Treatments can be a great way to relieve pain and manage the discomfort caused by shoulder pain. Routine chiropractic treatments provide those suffering from shoulder pain with a safe, non-invasive, non-addictive alternative to help them manage their pain, discomfort, or swelling.

Chiropractic adjustments help to reduce joint restrictions and misalignments in the shoulder, which may be the cause of your pain, and other joints in the body. Additionally, these adjustments are made to both reduce pain and improve the function of the tender joint and release any compression of spinal nerves. By increasing joint mobility and improving the function of your nervous system, you can quickly feel a significant reduction in muscle tension and joint stiffness – move with more freedom and supple movements.
