What Causes Tendinopathy?

Tendinopathy Dublin Physio

Tendinitis and tendinopathy are caused by a number of different factors. Injuries, overuse injuries, repetitive motions, biomechanical problems within the body can all contribute to tendinitis or tendinopathy.

Tendinitis and tendinopathies are very common in the tendons of the glutes (i.e gluteal tendinopathy), hamstrings (i.e hamstring tendinopathy), knees (patellar tendinopathy, ‘Runner’s Knee’), elbow (i.e tennis elbow).

What Does Tendinitis or Tendonitis Mean?

It is confusing but both spellings are technically correct. Tendinitis simply means the condition is inflammatory (“itis”) in nature and within the tendon (“tendin”). Inflammation is the body’s first stage of tissue healing, and usually only lasts 5-6 days.

What Does Tendinopthay Mean?

Tendinopathy means the injury is non-inflammatory in nature but degenerative in nature, and within tendons, i.e it’s not an acute (i.e new) process but generally longstanding tendinosis or degenerative tendinopathy.

How We Treat Tendon Injuries Like Insertional Achilles Tendinitis

In tendinopathy, the body is slowly repairing itself and re-building collagen in a disorganized manner. This results in pain and damage to surrounding tissues that can lead to a limited range of motion and muscle weakness.

At Dublin Physical & Chiropractic we offer physical therapy treatment for tendinopathies, using targeted therapies to reduce pain and inflammation while strengthening the tendons. We also offer chiropractic care to address the biomechanical causes of tendinopathies.

Physical Therapy Care

Upper Body Strengthening Dublin Physio

Physical therapy treatment usually begins with the identification of tendinitis or tendinopathy. The next course of action is to reduce any pain and increase the range of motion.

Our physical therapists use a combination of hands-on therapies, such as massage therapy or deep tissue release, and joint mobilizations to reduce pain and increase range of motion.

Once the pain has significantly reduced – our physical therapists will prescribe a gradual, goal-orientated exercise program to regain strength and endurance of the affected muscles and tendons to prevent any future injuries and improve the function of the tissues.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is a type of light treatment that uses specific wavelengths to reduce pain and inflammation caused by tendinitis or tendinopathy.

It is a non-invasive treatment, meaning it does not require any needles or injections.

At Dublin Physical & Chiropractic we use infrared lasers at varying wavelengths to treat tendons and ligaments that cause tendonitis or tendinopathy in the arms (i.e elbow), legs (i.e knee, and tendons in the feet (i.e plantar fasciitis).

Exercise Therapy

Exercise is extremely important for tendinitis and tendinopathy treatment.  Our physical therapists will prescribe an exercise program that focuses on regaining strength, flexibility, range of motion, endurance, coordination (balance), and speed to prevent further injury or re-injury.

At Dublin Physical & Chiropractic, we use a combination of therapeutic exercises, manual therapy techniques, and treatment modalities to address the tendons affected.

For example, in knee tendonitis or tendinopathy our physical therapists may prescribe strengthening exercises for the quadriceps muscles with resistance bands around your knees, plyometric exercises (jumping), or balance training on a wobble board.

CORE Stabilization Exercises

Our physical therapists may prescribe specific core stabilization exercises to address the bio-mechanics that are causing your tendonitis or tendinopathy symptoms. If you suffer from hip, low back, pelvic pain caused by tendons, you may benefit from a CORE strengthening program.

At Dublin Physical & Chiropractic, we have physical therapists with advanced training in the treatment of tendinopathies and tendinitis using these innovative treatments to help improve recovery times for our patients.
