Trigeminal Neuralgia Treatment & Relief

What Causes It? The Trigeminal Nerve?

Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition caused by irritation or damage to the trigeminal nerve. The trigeminal nerve is a large cranial nerve that exits through your skull and helps with sensation in your face as well as controls muscles used for chewing.

The trigeminal nerve has three branches: ophthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular. Each of these have their own functions. The ophthalmic branch is responsible for sensation in the eyelid and forehead, the maxillary branch is responsible for sensation in the cheek and upper lip, and the mandibular branch is responsible for sensation in the lower lip and chin.

Trigeminal neuralgia can affect any of these branches, depending on the cause.

Trigeminal Neuralgia Symptoms

The symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia (type 1) can vary depending on which branch of the trigeminal nerve is affected. However, common symptoms include:

  • Sharp, stabbing or burning pain in the face that may be unilateral or bilateral, often described as a ‘shock-like’ sensation.
  • Pain that is triggered by a stimulus, such as touch
  • Pain that can last from a few seconds to several minutes at a time, with rare episodes lasting a hour to several hours.

Another form of trigeminal neuralgia (type 2) is characterised by a constant lower intensity pain, instead of the intermittent pain experienced in the primary form of the condition (type 1).

However, the intensity of both forms can very debilitating and hugely impacts the quail of life of those experiencing it.

Treatment – Treating Trigeminal Neuralgia

Physical therapy

Our physical therapists will design an individualised treatment program to help you manage trigeminal neuralgia and get back to living your normal life. The goal of physical therapy is to help you manage trigeminal neuralgia by reducing pain and inflammation, improving range of motion and strength, as well as provide techniques to prevent trigeminal neuralgia from occurring in the future.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is a drug-free, non-surgical option for trigeminal neuralgia. It helps to improve blood flow and nerve function which can help to reduce inflammation and pain. Our chiropractors use gentle spinal adjustments and other techniques such as spinal adjustments, non-surgical decompression, and intrinsic core strengthening.

Intrinsic Core Strengthening

Intrinsic core strengthening is a technique that our physical therapists use to help improve stability and reduce pain in the abdominal and pelvic region. This exercise helps to activate the deep muscles of the abdomen and pelvis which can help to support the spine, improving nerve function and reducing inflammation.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is a drug-free, non-invasive treatment that uses light to help reduce trigeminal neuralgia pain and inflammation. Laser therapy works by increasing circulation which helps to remove metabolic waste products from the body, improve cell function and promote tissue repair.
