What Causes Pain At The Wrist?

Treatment for wrist pain

Wrist pain can be caused by a number of factors, including a fall or overuse injury. Sports like racquetball or tennis are common causes of wrist pain due to the repetitive actions like catching, throwing, or gripping that may lead to ‘an overuse injury’ or ‘strain’‘.

Falls And Sports – Wrist And Hand Injuries

Wrist sprains often occur when you fall onto outstretched hands while playing sports. Wrist fractures are also very common in older people who may have poor vision or balance and loss their footing and naturally use their wrist to break their fall.

Arthritis Wrist Pain

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

Another cause of wrist pain is nerve-like pain, often coupled with altered sensation down the arm and into the hand, and reduced grip strength. It is often referred to as carpel tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when a nerve (the median nerve) that runs from the neck all the way down the arm into the fingers gets compressed at the wrist where the nerve runs through a tunnel of tendons and connective tissue.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is common in those who have desk-based jobs, as the wrist repetitively rests on the edge of a desk or keyboard for several hours a day. Wrist pain is also a common work-related complaint for those with manual jobs, for example; carpenters, landscapers, and even physical therapists, and nurses.

Our physical therapist offers specific exercises to rehabilitate carpel tunnel syndrome.

Arthritis: OA And RA.

Arthritis is a condition that can affect any joint in the body. Osteoarthritis (OA) commonly affects the large joints in the body, like the knees and hips. Whereas, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and grout, auto-immune conditions that affect the smaller joints – like the wrists and fingers.

It is so important to be proactive when it comes to arthritis as it is progressive. It is so important to maintain good dexterity and grip strength for day-to-day activities, like riding a bike or grocery shopping.
