What is Arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows the surgeon to examine and, if necessary, perform arthroscopic surgery on a joint. The entire process typically takes less than an hour to complete with most cases requiring only local anesthesia.

What to Expect After Arthroscopic Surgery?

After arthroscopic surgery, you can expect to experience some pain, swelling, stiffness, and limited movement. Depending on the surgery, you may be required to wear a splint and/or cast.

These symptoms can be addressed with physiotherapy treatment such as joint mobilizations which help restore movement of your joint by increasing blood flow which nourishes the joint; laser therapy to reduce inflammation and swelling, and a specific exercise program to strengthen the muscles around the joint to allow you to safely get back to doing the things you love and to prevent future injuries or arthroscopic surgeries. So you can leave that behind.

If you’ve had an arthroscopy and are looking for physiotherapy treatment, Dublin Physio & Chiropractic can help. We offer a variety of different treatments to address the symptoms that come with the surgery such as stiffness, pain, swelling, and limited mobility.

Physiotherapy Care After Arthroscopic Surgery In Dublin, Ireland

Physiotherapy care after arthroscopic surgery is very much goal-orientated. The goal is to get you moving safely and without pain. We achieve this by first assessing your current level of function; then through a variety of treatments (mobilizations, laser therapy, strengthening exercises); and finally by providing education on at-home treatment options like proper sleep positions or ways to increase activity levels with exercise.

The Importance of Physiotherapy Treatment for Arthroscopy

Physiotherapy treatment is extremely important after arthroscopic surgery. Physiotherapy gives you the best chance to achieve optimal recovery post-surgery.

Physiotherapy reduces post-operative pain and swelling, breaks up any tough, fibrous scar tissue, increases range of motion and freedom of movement, promotes strong, organized, and functional tissue (like ligaments, tendons, and muscles), strengthens weakened muscles, and promotes new and optimal movement patterns.

Physiotherapy works to reduce your symptoms right after surgery and improve your function long after your surgery.

Laser Therapy

Laser Therapy is an effective therapy used to reduce pain and swelling caused by inflammation after arthroscopic surgery. Laser therapy works by stimulating the body’s normal healing processes, speeding up your recovery. Laser therapy increases oxygen-rich blood flow to the operated area or joint, and increases mitochondrial density in that area, promoting cellular regeneration.

Laser therapy has been clinically proven to reduce pain levels by 30%, decrease swelling by 40% (measured on an ankle sprain), increase range of motion after arthroscopic surgery, and improve muscle strength when used as part of post-operative rehabilitation.

Joint Traction

Joint traction relieves pressure on the operated joint allowing vital nutrients and water to rush into the joint and nourish the tissue. This is especially important after arthroscopic surgery as inflammation and swelling can limit your range of motion and prolong recovery time, so allowing for proper blood flow to be restored is extremely beneficial. Joint traction also loosens up tight muscles which help prevent future injuries by improving circulation and increasing joint stability.

Exercise Therapy

Exercise therapy is used to strengthen the muscles surrounding your operated joint. This helps you get back to doing all of those activities you love and prevents future injuries or arthroscopic surgeries with a strong, fully functional body. Exercise therapy also reduces pain and swelling in the area by promoting blood flow, so exercising after surgery is hugely beneficial for your recovery.

Core Strengthening After Arthroscopic Surgery

Most people do not use their core muscles correctly or at all. Utilizing our core correctly has so many long-term health benefits. Our strong core muscles can take a lot of the stress and demands put on our bodies. But for most people, the muscles can surround our joints and the somewhat vulnerable structures of our joints (such as the cartilage, ligaments, or bursas) take all the load.

For prevention of injury and pain, for optimal functioning, and to truly function to bodies true potential, it is important to not only use the muscles that surround our joints but also to use our core muscles!

Upper Body Strengthening Dublin Physio

Intrinsic core strengthening will activate your core muscles and help offload the demands and stress put on your joints that lead to painful conditions that lead to arthroscopic surgeries.
