What Causes Pain After A Hip Fracture Repair?
Pain is commonly experienced after surgery to repair a hip fracture, this is due to inflammation as your body works to form new bone at the site of the fracture. But the pain may be the result of damage to other tissues during surgery – for example, skin and muscle. It is also common to experience swelling at the surgical site.
Why Is Physical Therapy Important After A Hip Fracture?
Your physical therapist will work with you to show you the best ways to move that won’t cause pain. Our treatment options are individualized, depending on your hip fracture type and the severity of the injury. We use a variety of treatments including education, exercise therapy, manual techniques (manipulation), taping interventions, soft tissue release techniques, acupuncture, and advice on hip protection.
What Are The Benefits Of Physical Therapy Treatment?
It is important to get back into your daily routines as soon as possible, physical therapy can help you do that! Our treatments will increase blood flow around the injured area which helps form new bone cells. Blood supply also brings nutrients to muscles and tissue which helps promote healing and reduces pain.
You will regain your strength, ability to move about with ease, and return to daily activities such as bathing or getting dressed on your own. You’ll also build up muscle around the injured area which makes it stronger and more stable – reducing the risk of further fractures in the future!

Our Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Program
Our physical therapy rehabilitation programs are goal-orientated. We will discuss your rehabilitation goals with you during your initial consultation. Usually, when it comes to hip fracture recovery, many of our patients first want to move pain-free, without swelling and stiffness. This can be achieved through manual therapy – like joint mobilizations and gentle exercises.
They also want to feel stronger and walk without aid (i.e a walker or crutch). Patients may also want the scar to appear less red and obvious – your physical therapy can also use scar management techniques and teach them to you so you can do them at home so you have a smooth and barely visible scar.
Our physical therapists use a combination of manual therapy an individually tailored exercise program to improve strength, coordination, balance, and endurance to prevent any future falls or fractures.
Core Strengthening After A Hip Fracture
It is so important to strengthen the core after a hip fracture because it will help with walking and balance. It will also reduce the risk of further fractures in the future!
Core exercises should be done at least twice a day after surgery, you can start by doing them lying down then progress to standing or sitting on an exercise ball which has been shown to improve core strength more than using gym equipment such as a static bike.
